Improvisation and Adaptive Decision-Making: Responding to an unexpected action

Acknowledge the action, clarify intent, and distinguish established facts from new assumptions. Use an applicable procedure, a plausible response, or a brief pause to give the group a usable next step. You need not instantly invent an elaborate answer.

Example: When players seek help from an incidental merchant, clarify what help they want and consider the merchant's established interests before responding.

Check your understanding: Is a short pause always a failure of improvisation? No. A bounded pause can protect clarity and continuity.

Application: choose a situation where you could try this approach. Write the cue you will look for and the action you intend to take.
